  • Digital Unit Schacht One

Glück auf! Here’s to a digital future!

Schacht One is the digital unit of the Haniel Group: Together with the divisions, Schacht One develops ideas for new or complementary business models, which are then brought to market in the shortest possible time. Schacht One also advises the divisions on the development and implementation of their digital agendas. “We have thus created a real accelerator for digital change at Haniel. This is unique for a holding company," emphasizes Haniel CEO Stephan Gemkow. Since its launch in 2016, the creative collaboration between Schacht One and the Haniel divisions has resulted in numerous internal start-ups. So www.bueromoebelonline.de of TAKKT. Here customers will find a range of more than 5,000 office products - from a single chair to complete furnishings. www.remetal.de offers an online platform for scrap metals. Private households, craftsmen or small businesses can arrange an individual pick-up date there; their scrap is analysed on site and paid for accordingly.

This is a historic day. When we look back, we will say: This was a moment when something changed in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and in the Ruhr area.

Schacht One is based at the Zollverein Colliery world heritage cultural site in Essen - a place of unique historical significance for Haniel: Schacht One lies just 500 metres away from mine shaft 1. It was there, 165 years ago, that Franz Haniel succeeded in the large-scale mining of bituminous coal for the first time ever. With this, he provided the fuel for the industrialisation of the Ruhr area and far beyond. Schacht One is a reminder of this pioneering effort and is where the fuel will be mined for the next major economic revolution – the digital revolution.

In order to get closer to this goal, Schacht One founded the Schmiede Zollverein in 2018 together with the auditor ETL. In close partnership with Schacht One, Schmiede Zollverein makes experience, methods and content available to medium-sized companies - including companies not owned by Haniel. Haniel CEO Stephan Gemkow sees advantages for the entire region in the foundation: "With Schmiede Zollverein, the Ruhr area secures the opportunity to make its many medium-sized companies 'enkelf?hig'. At the same time, we are proving that as a company, it is not only in Berlin or Munich that digital change potential can be raised, but also in the pot."
